Guidelines for New Comers

  • Orientation Day will be on Friday, 18th January 2019 in the Department of Geography
  • For B.A./ B.Sc. (Hons.)/ BS, there will be four Courses (One Major i.e. Goegraphy, one Complusory and Two Subsidiaries)
  • The Course Numbers for First year subjects are from 301 to 399 (Find the course number along with Room Numbers on the Time table to avoid missing any lecture in the beginning)
  • The classes for Geography and Compulsory will take place in the Department of Geography.

  • The classes for subsisdiaries will take place in the respective Departments. The time table for subsidiaries or minor classes will be posted on the notice board of the respective departments. (Therefore, students are requested to visit the subsidiary departments in which they are interested.)

    FACULTIES AND SUBSIDIARIES

  • Geography is a Faculty of Science department but it awards degree in both Faculty of Science and Social Science depending upon Intermediate background
  • The students may select subsidiary subjects from either Science Faculty or Social Science Faculty
  • The selection of subjects will determine the degree (faculty) of a student along with their Intermediate background
  • Intermediate with Science: If both the subsidiaries are from Science Faculty then B.Sc. (Hons.) degree will be awarded
  • Intermediate with Science: If one subsidiary is from Science Faculty and one from Social Science/Arts Faculty then B.Sc. (Hons.) degree will be awarded
  • Intermediate with Science: If both the subsidiaries are from Social Science/Arts Faculty then B.A. (Hons.) degree will be awarded
  • Intermediate with Arts: B.A. (Hons.) degree will be awarded
  • Intermediate with Commerce: B.A. (Hons.) degree will be awarded

    IMPORTANT NOTE FOR B.SC. (HONS.)/ BS FACULTY OF SCIENCE SUBSIDIARIES
  • Students who select Physics or Applied Chemistry as subsidiary should have passed the Intermediate or Higher Secondary Examination with Mathematics or Statistics.
  • Any student who has not passed Intermediate Science with Biology is not permitted to choose any subject from the Biology group.
  • Only those students can take Mathematics as a subsidiary subject who had Mathematics as an optional subject in the Intermediate, or who have passed certificate Course in Mathematics from Karachi University.
  • All B.Sc. (Hons.)/BS students are advised to select their subsidiary subjects in consultation with the Chairpersons of their major Department.

    IMPORTANT NOTE FOR B.A. (HONS.)/ BS FACULTY OF ARTS/ SOCIAL SCIENCE SUBSIDIARIES
  • Students cannot have two languages as subsidiary.
  • Students who have Geography as Major cannot take Social Works as Subsidiary. However, students with Statistics as Major should opt for Mathematics as subsidiary.
  • Students can choose only one of the following subjects: General History, Islamic History, Islamic Studies and Mathematics.
  • International Relations cannot be taken together with Political Science.
  • Students can choose Mathematics as subsidiary only if they had Mathematics as optional subject in HSC examination or have passed Certificate Course in Mathematics from Karachi University.
  • The following subjects cannot be taken simultaneously as subsidiary; only one from each group can be selected:
  • Group A: Psychology or Geography.
  • Group B: Sociology or Social Works.
  • Group C: Political Science or International Relations.
  • Group D: Islamic History or General History.
  • Students taking Geography as major subject will be governed by rules concerning Hons. of Science Faculty.
  • Students may select the subject of Women Studies as a subsidiary in consultation with the Chairpersons of their major departments.
    IMPORTANT NOTE
  • If a student selects a subsidiary subject which is not in accordance with the above directives, he/she will not be examined in that subject.
  • Every student, therefore, is directed to consult Chairperson of the major department before selecting subsidiary subjects.
  • A candidate choosing a wrong combination is bound to get the wrong subject changed with the permission of Chairperson / Concerned Dean.
